The goal is to detect tools leaving the building.
If the reader also detects tools sitting ten meters away in a nearby room, the software may record movements that never happened.
Now the system has more data, but less useful information.
This is why the highest possible reading distance is not always desirable.
For asset tracking, controlled detection can be more important than maximum range.
RFID Tags Matter More Than Many Buyers Expect
The reader gets most of the attention, but the RFID tag is just as important.
Assets come in different materials.
You may be tracking:
Plastic boxes
Metal tools

A standard RFID label may work well on cardboard but perform poorly when attached directly to metal.
For metal assets, an on-metal RFID tag is often a better choice.
Tag orientation also matters.

Imagine a manufacturing company with 500 production tools.

The system says that a particular tool should be in Zone B.
A worker walks through the area with a handheld scanner and searches for the tag.
Fixed readers are better for automatic checkpoints.

For RFID solution providers and distributors, the customer application should come before the hardware order.
A few questions are worth asking:
How many assets need to be tracked?
A system for 100 tools is different from one for 50,000 containers.
How often do assets move?
If assets rarely move, continuous RFID monitoring may not provide much value.
Where should the system detect movement?
Doorways, production lines, storage areas, and vehicle gates all need different antenna arrangements.
What software is already being used?
The RFID reader may need to communicate with WMS, ERP, MES, or custom software.
Common Problems During Deployment
RFID asset tracking can run into a few practical issues.
Metal Interference
Metal assets often require specialized tags and careful antenna positioning.
Unwanted Reads
Too much coverage can cause the reader to detect assets outside the intended area.
Poor Tag Placement
A tag hidden behind metal or installed in the wrong position may have weaker performance.
Software Problems
The reader can work perfectly while the actual asset database still produces incorrect records.
That last problem is easy to overlook.
RFID is a physical identification technology, but the final result is a software workflow.

Another might need container management.
The hardware does not necessarily need to be completely different, but the configuration probably will be.

Reading distance
Movement speed
Software data flow
A short field test can reveal problems that never appear in a product specification sheet.
