This question comes up in almost every warehouse project.
A customer points to a pallet loaded with cartons and asks, “Can your RFID reader read all of these at the same time?”
The short answer is yes—but not because the reader reads every tag in one single instant.
Instead, modern UHF RFID systems use an anti-collision algorithm that allows tags to respond one after another at extremely high speed. To the operator, it feels like everything has been read simultaneously.
Many people imagine RFID working like a barcode scanner.
With a barcode, you scan one label, then move to the next. RFID works differently.
When dozens or even hundreds of tags enter the reader’s field, they don’t all speak at once. The reader manages the communication so each tag gets a chance to respond without creating confusion.
This process happens so quickly that, in everyday warehouse operations, it appears almost instantaneous.
There isn’t a fixed number.
Reading performance depends on several factors, including:
In a well-designed UHF RFID system, it’s common to identify hundreds of tags within a few seconds. Some industrial readers can process tag data at rates of several hundred tags per second under ideal conditions.
Actual results will always depend on the application.

One situation we’ve seen more than once involves tightly packed cartons.
The customer assumes the reader isn’t powerful enough, but the issue turns out to be tag placement.
If several tags are pressed closely against metal objects or hidden behind liquid-filled products, radio signals become weaker.
Changing the tag location often improves the reading rate without replacing any hardware.
People sometimes compare specifications from completely different applications.
A parking system usually needs to identify one vehicle at a time.
A warehouse portal, on the other hand, may need to recognize an entire pallet containing dozens of tagged products as it moves through a dock door.
The reader configuration for these two projects can be very different, even if the hardware model is the same.

It’s easy to focus on the highest tag-reading speed listed in a datasheet.
But speed alone doesn’t guarantee better system performance.
If the rfid antenna covers too large an area, the reader may also detect nearby pallets that weren’t supposed to be counted. In inventory management, accurate reads are usually more valuable than simply collecting data as fast as possible.
Many experienced integrators spend more time adjusting antenna position than changing reader settings.
Another point that’s easy to overlook is data processing.
Imagine a reader capturing hundreds of EPC numbers in just a few seconds. Your WMS or ERP system still needs to filter duplicate reads, verify item status and update inventory correctly.
That’s why many developers pay as much attention to the SDK and API as they do to the hardware itself.
Stable communication through TCP, Serial or REST API helps ensure large volumes of RFID data can be processed efficiently.
In real projects, the question usually isn’t “How many tags can the reader detect?” It’s “Can the whole system process those tags accurately without slowing down operations?”
