Many people spend weeks comparing RFID readers before placing an order. Then, once the hardware arrives, the installation is treated as the easy part.
Interestingly, that’s where quite a few projects start running into trouble.
We’ve seen readers blamed for poor performance when the real issue was the installation. A small change in mounting height or antenna direction often improves the reading area more than increasing transmit power.
One question comes up almost every week: How high should a long range RFID reader be installed?
There isn’t a universal answer.
For warehouse dock doors, many installers begin around 2.5 to 3.5 meters. Vehicle access systems are different because windshield tags sit much lower than pallet tags. In factories, the ideal height also depends on conveyor speed and the size of the products being identified.
If the reader is mounted too high, the signal spreads over a larger area and may start detecting tags outside the intended zone. Too low, and large pallets or forklifts may block the signal.
A little field testing usually saves much more time than guessing from a specification sheet.

It’s tempting to mount the reader directly in front of the target. Sometimes that works.
In other cases, installing the antenna slightly off-center and aiming it toward the reading path creates a much cleaner detection area.
We once visited a logistics warehouse where two dock doors shared a wall. Both readers were operating normally, yet tags kept appearing at the wrong door. Rotating one antenna by only a few degrees almost eliminated the cross-read problem.

Developers usually focus on software integration, while installers pay attention to brackets and bolts. The network cable often receives very little attention.
Long cable runs, poor shielding or loose waterproof connectors can lead to unstable communication and intermittent reader failures.
For outdoor projects, industrial-grade Ethernet cables and waterproof cable glands are generally worth the extra cost.
Grounding isn’t the most exciting part of an RFID project, but it becomes important once the equipment has been operating for a while.
Proper grounding helps reduce electrical noise and protects the reader from voltage fluctuations. In factories with heavy machinery, this can noticeably improve long-term stability.
It’s one of those installation steps that doesn’t attract much attention—until something goes wrong.
An IP65 or IP67 enclosure certainly helps, but it isn’t the whole story.
Outdoor readers also need protection from direct sunlight, standing water and temperature changes. Rainwater often enters through cable connections rather than the reader enclosure itself.
Adding a small weather shield above the reader is a simple improvement that many experienced installers recommend.

Projects installed in parking lots, ports or mining sites are much more exposed to lightning than indoor systems.
A surge protector and proper grounding may cost very little compared with replacing damaged equipment after a storm.
Some customers only think about lightning protection after the first failure. It’s usually better to include it during the initial installation.
Every RFID site is a little different. Warehouses filled with metal racks behave differently from open truck yards, while factories bring their own challenges with machinery and electrical interference. Spending a little extra time on reader position, cable routing and environmental protection often delivers better results than changing hardware later.
