- Signal loss in cables—long cable runs reduce power reaching the antenna
- More components to fail—more potential points of failure
Non-integrated systems are the standard for warehouse portals, conveyor systems, manufacturing lines, and any application requiring wide or flexible coverage .
The Third Option: Hybrid Readers
Some readers offer the best of both worlds. They have an internal antenna for basic use but also include ports for connecting external antennas when you need more range or different coverage .
The SparkFun M7E Hecto module is a good example. It has a PCB trace antenna for short-range reading (a few inches), but you can move a tiny resistor to enable the u.FL connector for an external high-gain antenna .

The RFID antenna is the mouth and ears . It:

- Radiates those waves into space
