You have an NFC reader—maybe it’s in your phone, or a USB dongle. You also have a bunch of RFID tags floating around. Before you start a project, you need a straight answer: can NFC reader read RFID tags?

Here’s the practical truth: It can read some of them, but almost certainly not the ones you’d use for serious business tracking. You’re likely holding the wrong tool for the job.

Let’s break down what actually works, and more importantly, what doesn’t.

The Technical Rule: Frequency is Everything

An NFC reader operates at one specific radio frequency: 13.56 MHz. This is known as the High Frequency (HF) band in the RFID world. NFC is essentially a specialized set of communication protocols built on top of this HF RFID standard.

Therefore, the golden rule is: An NFC reader can only read RFID tags that also operate at 13.56 MHz and speak a compatible protocol.

Tags that will likely work:

• NFC Tags: Like NTAG or MIFARE Ultralight stickers.
• Many Contactless Smart Cards: Credit/debit cards (for reading public info, not transactions), some transit cards, and certain access cards.

If your tag falls into this category, your NFC reader will probably detect it when brought within 1-4 centimeters.

The Tags Your NFC Reader is Blind To

This is where expectations crash. Most RFID tags used in operational business environments operate on different frequencies. Your NFC reader cannot see them. It’s not a software issue; it’s a hardware limitation.

1. 125 kHz Low-Frequency (LF) Tags: That classic, thick key fob for your office or parking garage? It’s on a different wavelength. No compatibility.
2. 860-960 MHz Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) Tags: This is the critical one. Every modern warehouse pallet, retail apparel item, and industrial tool asset uses UHF tags for long-range reading. Your NFC reader is completely useless here. It’s like trying to listen to an AM station on an FM radio.

The Business Reality Check

So, you can technically answer “yes” to “can NFC reader read RFID tags” for a small subset. But in a business context, that “yes” is meaningless.

• Range is Impractical: Requiring a physical “tap” destroys any efficiency for inventory counts or asset checks.
• No Bulk Scanning: It’s a one-by-one, manual process.
