I had a customer call last year. He had a desk drawer full of access credentials. Old 125 kHz HID fobs. Newer 13.56 MHz MIFARE cards. A handful of UHF pallet tags left over from a pilot project. He pointed at the drawer and asked: “Can an RFID reader read multiple tags models? Like, all of these, with one device?”
The short answer is yes. The long answer is it depends entirely on what you mean by “one device.” And if you assume too much, you’ll buy hardware that doesn’t do half of what you need.
Let me walk you through what “reading multiple tag models” actually means on a hardware spec sheet—not the marketing version.
Level 1: Same Frequency, Different Protocols (The Easy Win)
If your tags all operate at the same frequency—say, 13.56 MHz HF—you have options. Modern HF readers are surprisingly versatile.
Take the ID ACCESS 2500. It’s an access control reader that handles ISO 14443A, ISO 14443B, and ISO 18092. It reads MIFARE Classic, MIFARE DESFire EV1/EV2/EV3, MIFARE Ultralight, NTAG 213/215/216, and even FeliCa . That’s multiple tag models—different chips, different memory sizes, different encryption levels—all on one reader.
GAO’s ACR122S does similar: ISO 14443 Type A & B, FeliCa, and all four types of NFC tags . One reader, many tag families. This works because they all speak variations of the 13.56 MHz language.
Level 2: Different Frequencies, Same Enclosure (The Hardware Sandwich)
Now, what if you need to read 125 kHz LF and 13.56 MHz HF cards? That drawer I mentioned earlier—old proximity fobs next to new smart cards.
This is where “one reader” gets fuzzy. The ZKTeco KR900 series is marketed as a single reader. It supports both 125 kHz ID cards and 13.56 MHz IC cards, including DESFire EV1/EV2/EV3 and NTAG .
But here’s what the datasheet doesn’t scream from the front page: it’s not one radio reading both frequencies. It’s two complete reader modules sharing a power supply and a housing. LF antenna, HF antenna, separate decoding logic, all in one box. It works beautifully, but it’s not magic—it’s two tools in a trench coat.
Level 3: Crossing Technology Families (UHF + Barcode + HF)
Then you have the hybrid devices. The Chainway SR160 is a handheld that reads RAIN UHF RFID tags and 1D/2D barcodes . It toggles modes at a button press. UHF for pallets, barcode for legacy items.
This isn’t the same radio reading both. It’s a UHF RFID module + an optical imager in one grip. Again: two completely different capture technologies, same plastic housing.
Level 4: UHF Multi-Protocol (EPC Gen2 + ISO 18000-6B)
Even within UHF, there are multiple tag models. Some legacy tags use ISO 18000-6B. Most modern RAIN tags use EPC Class 1 Gen2. A good UHF reader—like GAO’s integrated reader with the Impinj R2000 chipset—supports both . That’s the same radio, same antenna, same frequency band, just different protocol stacks in firmware.
The Hard Limit: LF vs. UHF
Can you get one reader that reads 125 kHz animal implants and 900 MHz pallet tags? Not in a single radio module. The physics are too different—antenna size, modulation, power requirements. You’d need a multi-frequency reader with separate LF and UHF boards . They exist, but they’re specialty items, not commodity hardware.

I’ve stood in security offices where someone bought a batch of “universal” readers that turned out to be HF-only, and their entire installed base was 125 kHz. I’ve watched warehouse managers try to use UHF handhelds to read NFC asset tags. The confusion is real, and it’s expensive.
