If you have ever walked through a store door and set off an alarm, or tapped a card to get into your office, you have used a passive RFID tags. They are everywhere—stuck on merchandise, embedded in library books, even sewn into hospital linens. But most people have no idea what they are or how they work. At CYKEO, we get questions about these little devices all the time. Are they trackable? Do they need batteries? How do they last so long? Let us answer those questions and clear up the confusion.
A passive RFID tag is a small device that uses radio waves to identify and track objects. The key word here is “passive.” Unlike active tags, which have their own battery, passive tags have no internal power source whatsoever . They are just a microchip and an antenna, usually sandwiched inside a sticker, a card, or a hard plastic enclosure .
When you hear people talk about RFID in retail or logistics, they are almost always talking about passive tags. They are cheap, tiny, and last practically forever because there is no battery to die . The tag itself is about as smart as a rock until a reader comes along and wakes it up.
This is the question that trips everyone up. How can something with no power send a signal? The answer is physics. Passive RFID tags work through a process called backscatter .
An RFID reader constantly shoots out radio waves. When a passive tag enters that field, its antenna picks up the energy. That energy powers up the microchip just long enough for it to send its stored data back to the reader . The tag basically “borrows” power from the reader, uses it to wake up, and shouts its ID number before going back to sleep. It all happens in a fraction of a second.
Think of it like a solar-powered calculator. It does not work in the dark, but shine a light on it, and it fires right up. The reader is the light.
It depends on the frequency. Passive RFID tags come in a few different flavors, and the read range varies a lot :
The trade-off is simple: longer range usually means higher frequency and a more expensive reader setup. But for most inventory applications, UHF is the sweet spot.
Yes, by a huge margin. This is the main reason passive RFID tags are so popular. A basic passive tag costs pennies. In fact, prices have dropped below $0.04 per tag for high-volume purchases . Active tags, with their batteries and transmitters, can run you $20 to $50 each or more .
When you need to tag thousands of individual items—shirts, books, boxes of cereal—you cannot afford to put a $20 battery-powered tag on each one. Passive tags make that scale possible. The reader infrastructure costs more upfront, but the tags themselves are essentially disposable.
A long time. Since there is no battery, there is nothing to “run out.” The theoretical lifespan of a passive RFID tag is basically infinite . In the real world, the physical tag usually fails before the electronics do. The antenna can break, the adhesive can peel off, or the plastic casing can crack.
Manufacturers often rate them for 5 to 10 years depending on the materials and environment . If you stick one on a box inside a warehouse, it will probably outlast the box. If you bolt one onto a truck frame that goes through mud and salt every day, it might die sooner. That is why there are rugged versions with IP67 or IP68 ratings for harsh conditions .
Not much, compared to a USB drive. A typical passive RFID tag has memory measured in bits, not megabytes. Common sizes are 96 bits, 128 bits, or sometimes up to 8 kilobits for fancier models .
That might sound tiny, but it is enough. All you really need is a unique identifier—like a license plate for the object. That number links to a database record that holds all the details: what the item is, when it was made, where it should be, and so on . The tag itself does not store the history; it just points to it.
Some high-end passive tags have rewritable memory, so you can update the data occasionally . But for most tracking, a simple read-only ID is all you need .
This used to be a major headache. Metal reflects radio waves, and water absorbs them. Stick a standard passive RFID tag directly on a metal shelf or a bottle of water, and it becomes nearly invisible to the reader .
But technology has caught up. There are now specialized “on-metal” tags that include a little foam spacer or a ferrite layer to detune the antenna and make it work on conductive surfaces . For liquid applications, the design has to account for the dielectric interference. You just have to buy the right tag for the job. Everywhere. Low-cost RFID tags are the backbone of modern inventory management. Retailers use them to track every single garment from the warehouse to the sales floor . Libraries use them so you can check out twenty books at once by just putting them on a pad . Hospitals use them to make sure infusion pumps do not wander off to the wrong floor .
There are even weirder applications. The National Science Foundation funded a project to use passive tags for tracking firefighter tools during wildfires . They are used for race timing, laundry management in hotels, and tracking returnable transport items like pallets and bins . If it moves and you want to know where it is, someone is probably trying to stick a passive tag on it.
This comes up constantly. People hear “radio” and “tracking” and get nervous. Here is the reality: a passive RFID tag has no battery. It cannot “send out” a signal on its own. It only responds when a reader screams at it first . And the range is limited—usually a few meters at most for UHF, and much less for HF and LF.
Also, they do not store your name or your address. Just a serial number. When you buy something at a store, they usually deactivate the tag at the register so it stops working entirely. Could someone read your clothes from across the street? No. The physics do not allow it. The tech just is not built that way.
