How to Read an RFID Card: It’s Simpler Than You Think (Until It Isn’t)
You’ve got an RFID card—a door key, a library card, a badge for work. You hear it beep at the reader, but you have no idea how that magic happens or how to do it yourself. Want to read an RFID card on your own? It’s not rocket science, but there’s a right way and about a dozen wrong ways that’ll leave you frustrated. Let’s walk through what actually works, based on doing this for years in everything from corporate IT to DIY projects.
First, stop overcomplicating it. Reading a card is a simple conversation: your reader asks “Who’s there?” and the card whispers back its ID. Your job is to set up that conversation. The biggest mistake people make is buying the wrong reader. Cards operate on different frequencies, and they’re not interchangeable.
Here’s your cheat sheet:
- 125 kHz (Low Frequency – LF): The old, simple cards. Think hotel keycards from the 2000s or basic entry fobs. They usually just have one unchangeable ID number.
- 13.56 MHz (High Frequency – HF/NFC): The modern standard. This is your office badge, transit card, or credit card with tap-to-pay. These can hold more data in memory blocks.
If you try to read an HF card with an LF reader, you’ll get nothing but silence. I wasted an afternoon on this once before I checked the tiny print on the card’s packaging. Figure out which one you have first.
The Gear You Need (No Fancy Jargon)
You don’t need a lab full of equipment.
- For a quick, simple read: Get a USB RFID reader. Plug it into your computer, it installs as a keyboard wedge, and when you tap a card, it types the ID number into any text field. It’s dumb but effective for logging IDs.
- For tinkering and seeing data: Get a PN532 module. It’s a little board you can connect via USB or to a Raspberry Pi/Arduino. With free software like “MIFARE Classic Tools,” you can see not just the card’s UID (serial number), but also explore its memory sectors—if you have the keys (more on that nightmare later).
- For reliability and no headaches: Use a purpose-built tool. A CYKEO handheld diagnostic reader is what I carry in my kit. It’s pre-configured, has a clear screen, and just works for both identifying card types and reading basic data. It’s for getting the job done, not for hobbyist hacking.
The Actual Steps (The Non-Theoretical Version)
Let’s say you have a common 13.56 MHz MIFARE card and a PN532 connected to your laptop.
- Plug in and open your software. Launch your reading app (e.g., NFC Tools, ProxGrind).
- Tap the card on the reader. Hold it steady. Don’t wave it around.
- Look at the output. At a minimum, you’ll see the UID—a 4, 7, or 10-byte number like
A1 B2 C3 D4. This is the card’s permanent serial number. Congratulations, you’ve read the card.
But you want the data on the card, not just its serial number. This is where the fun stops for most people. That data is stored in locked memory sectors. To access it, you need the correct six-byte secret key for that sector. Many systems use lazy default keys like FF FF FF FF FF FF. Your software might try these. If it works, you can “dump” the sector and see a block of hexadecimal code (e.g., 48 65 6C 6C 6F = “Hello” in text).
If the keys have been changed (which they should be in any semi-secure system), you hit a wall. You can’t read the data. This is a security feature, not a bug.
Why It’s Not Reading: The Quick Fix List
- No reaction at all: Wrong frequency. Confirm your card type and reader match.
- Reader beeps but software shows nothing: Check your COM port or USB connection. Drivers are often the culprit.
- “Authentication Error” when trying to read data: The sector is locked with a custom key. Unless you’re an auditor with the system keys, you’re done. Move on.
- Intermittent reads: You’re tapping too fast or not holding the card flat on the reader. Hold it there for a full second.
What Are You Actually Reading?
When you successfully read an RFID card, you might get different things:
- Just the UID: For simple access systems, this is all they check. “Is this serial number on the allowed list?”
- Hex Dump of Data: This could be anything: plain text (employee name), numbers (balance), or encrypted blocks. Interpreting it requires knowing the system’s data format.
- Card Type Info: A good reader will tell you if it’s MIFARE Classic, DESFire, etc. This is crucial for knowing what you’re dealing with.
The bottom line? Learning how to read an RFID card is straightforward for getting the UID. It gets complex fast when you want the data inside, because that’s where security lives. Start by just reading the UID of a few cards. Get comfortable with that. Then, try reading the data from a blank, rewritable card you’ve written to yourself. That’s the only way to truly see the cause and effect without hitting brick walls. For real-world system troubleshooting, a reliable tool like a CYKEO handheld saves hours of software frustration.
