You power up the system. The reader looks alive—fans spinning, lights blinking. But nothing happens when you wave a tag. Now you are stuck asking that frustrating question: how to check RFID reader working or not without calling support every five minutes?
Here is the honest truth. RFID readers are radio devices. They either work or they don’t. But sometimes they work partially—they power on but refuse to read. Sometimes they read but drop half the tags. Sometimes the problem isn’t even the reader.
Let me show you how to isolate this stuff yourself.
Step 1: The Physical Check (Skip Nothing)
Before you blame the reader, look at the obvious things. You would be surprised how often the fix is stupid simple.
Power. Is the reader actually getting power? Sounds dumb but check. Some readers have a separate power brick. Some run off PoE. If your CYKEO rfid reader has an LED on the power jack, it should be solid green. No light? Swap the cable first—always start there .
USB or Ethernet connection. If it is a USB rfid reader, open Device Manager on Windows. Look under Ports or Universal Serial Bus controllers. See anything with a yellow exclamation mark? That means driver issues . Unplug, replug, watch if Windows makes that connection sound.
Antenna connection. This one gets people. UHF readers need antennas. If the antenna cable is loose or damaged, the reader might still power on but read exactly zero tags . Check that SMA or TNC connector. Give it a gentle tighten—finger tight, not wrench tight.
Step 2: The Simple Tag Test
Here is the fastest way how to check RFID reader working or not. Grab a tag you know is good. Not some random tag that fell behind the shelf. A known working tag.
Open the demo software that came with your CYKEO reader. Or use any simple RFID test tool. Put the tag right on the antenna. Like literally touching it.
If it reads instantly—reader is probably fine. If it does not read even with direct contact, you have either a dead tag or a dead reader .
Now move the tag back slowly. Six inches. One foot. Three feet. If it drops off immediately, your antenna cable might be bad or your power settings are too low.
Step 3: Check the Obvious Software Stuff
Sometimes the hardware is fine. The problem is software blocking communication.
On Windows: Go to Device Manager. Find your reader under Ports or RFID Devices. Right-click, Properties, check “Device status.” It should say “This device is working properly.” If you see Code 10 or Code 43, that is driver corruption .
On Android handhelds like CYKEO B9: Go to Settings, Connected devices, find your reader in Bluetooth list. Is it paired but not connected? Some apps need you to establish the RFCOMM connection manually first.
Application conflicts. If you are using a custom app, test with the manufacturer’s demo software first. If the demo reads tags and your app does not, the problem is your code . If both fail, hardware or driver issue.
Step 4: Listen to the Radio (Literally)
UHF readers emit energy. You cannot hear it but you can sometimes feel it.
Put a known good tag near the antenna. Slowly move it. If the reader beeps or the software shows reads, great. If not, try a different tag. Some tags are optimized for specific frequencies. A tag meant for European frequencies (865-868 MHz) might read poorly on a US-band reader (902-928 MHz) .
Also try rotating the tag. RFID tags have directional properties. A tag facing edge-on to the antenna might not reflect enough signal back.
Step 5: Rule Out Environment Hell
RFID hates metal and water. If your reader is mounted near a metal conveyor belt or steel rack, you might think the reader is broken when it is actually just fighting physics .
Move the setup temporarily. Take the reader and antenna to a different spot. Wood table, open air, no metal nearby. Test again. If it reads fine there, your environment is the problem, not the hardware.
Also check for interference. Other radios, WiFi access points, even old fluorescent ballasts can stomp on UHF RFID frequencies. The CYKEO diagnostic tool has a “spectrum monitor” mode—use it to see if the noise floor is too high.
Step 6: The Reader Self-Test
Most industrial readers have built-in diagnostics. Here is how to access them on CYKEO equipment.
For CYKEO fixed readers (RA series):
- Press and hold the setup button for 5 seconds until all LEDs flash
- The reader enters test mode and sweeps antennas
- If any antenna port fails, the corresponding LED stays red
For CYKEO handhelds (B9 series):
- Go to Settings > About Device > Diagnostics
- Run “RFID Module Test”
- The app will attempt an inventory and report module status
If the self-test passes but your application still fails, the reader hardware is likely fine. Look at your integration.
Step 7: Firmware and Version Mismatch
Here is a subtle one. Sometimes readers update firmware and things change. Or your OS updates and breaks compatibility.
On Android devices specifically, the RFID radio firmware must match the Android version. If you updated from Android 11 to 14 without updating the radio firmware, the reader might show as connected but never actually read tags .
Check your CYKEO reader firmware version in the system info screen. Compare to the latest on the support site. If they mismatch, update.
Step 8: The Factory Reset Move
When nothing else works, reset.
On fixed readers: There is usually a pinhole reset. Press with paperclip for 10 seconds while powered. This clears network config and returns to factory defaults.
On handhelds: Settings > System > Reset options > Erase all data. Or the specific “Enterprise Reset” if available, which clears only configuration without wiping the OS .
After reset, test with default settings and demo software. If it works now, your config was bad. If it still fails, hardware issue.
When to Call It
Here is the honest cutoff. If you have:
- Tried different known-good tags
- Tested with manufacturer demo software
- Checked cables and connections
- Moved to a clean environment
- Done a factory reset
…and it still reads nothing? Probably hardware failure.
But before you ship it back, check one last thing. Some readers have internal fuses or protection circuits. If you shorted an antenna port (happens more than people admit), the reader might have shut down that port to protect itself. Disconnect power for 30 minutes, let everything discharge, then reconnect. Sometimes that resets the protection circuit.
Quick Reference Checklist
Keep this pinned to your desk:
- Power LED solid?
- USB detected in Device Manager?
- Antenna firmly connected?
- Known good tag reads in demo app?
- No metal/water interference?
- Firmware matches OS version?
- Self-test passes?
Most times how to check RFID reader working or not comes down to that list. Work through it in order. You will find the problem 90% of the time without calling anyone.
And if you get to the end and still have issues? That is what the CYKEO support team is for. We actually answer.
Still stuck?
Contact CYKEO technical support with your reader model number and a description of what you have tried. Include photos of the connection setup if possible—sometimes the issue is obvious to a fresh pair of eyes.
