The Quick Test You Can Do Right Now

Your iPhone (iPhone 7 and newer) has NFC—that’s Near Field Communication. NFC is a specific type of RFID technology that works at 13.56 MHz.

To see if iPhone reads RFID, try this:

1. Open the Apple Wallet app.
2. Tap the “+” to add a card.
3. Hold the top of your iPhone near a contactless credit card or transit card.

If it starts reading the card details, your iPhone just read an RFID chip. That’s it reading the NFC type of RFID. You can also get apps like “NFC Tools” to read basic data from compatible NFC stickers.

Here’s Why This Doesn’t Help You at Work

This is where hope meets a brick wall. I’ve seen warehouse managers, retail staff, and IT guys try this. They get excited for five seconds, then frustrated. Here’s why:

1. You Have to Touch the Tag. The range is about 1 centimeter. I’m not kidding—you need to press your iPhone against the tag. Try scanning a shelf of inventory or a pallet this way. It’s impossible. Real UHF RFID systems read from 3-10 meters away.
2. It’s Blind to Business RFID. The rfid tags that run warehouses, track tools, and manage retail stock are UHF RFID (860-960 MHz). Your iPhone’s NFC cannot see these. It’s a different technology, like trying to watch a Blu-ray on a cassette player. It also can’t read old 125 kHz key fobs.
3. One. Tag. At. A. Time. It reads slowly and manually. The power of RFID for business is bulk, automatic scanning—identifying 50 boxes on a pallet in under a second. Your iPhone can’t do that.

So, When Should You Even Ask This Question?

Asking “does iPhone read RFID” only matters for very specific things:
