You’ve got an NFC reader – maybe it’s built into your phone, or a separate device. You’ve also got some RFID tags around. It’s reasonable to wonder: can NFC reader read RFID? Do you need different equipment, or will this work?

Here’s the straightforward answer: Yes, an NFC reader can read certain types of RFID tags, but it’s picky. It won’t read the ones that matter for most business applications.

Let me explain why this is both true and misleading.

NFC is Actually a Type of RFID

First, understand the relationship. NFC (Near Field Communication) is a specific subset of RFID technology. Think of RFID as the whole category of radio-wave identification. NFC is one specialized branch of that category, operating at 13.56 MHz (the High Frequency or HF band).

So technically, asking if an NFC reader can read RFID is like asking if a sports car can drive on roads. Yes, because it’s a type of car designed for roads. Similarly, an NFC reader is a type of RFID reader designed for very short-range, secure communication.

What an NFC Reader CAN Read

An NFC reader is built to communicate with devices using the same 13.56 MHz frequency and specific protocols. This means it can read:

• Other NFC devices (like phones for file sharing)
• NFC tags (those programmable stickers)
• Many contactless smart cards (like credit cards, transit cards, some access cards that use ISO 14443 standards)

If you’ve ever tapped your phone to pay or used an app to read a transit card, you’ve seen an NFC reader reading RFID technology.

What an NFC Reader CANNOT Read (The Important Part)

Here’s where business users get frustrated. The RFID world is much bigger than just NFC. An NFC reader is completely incompatible with:

1. Low Frequency (LF) RFID (125 kHz): Those thick key fobs for older building access systems? Different frequency. No compatibility.
2. Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) RFID (860-960 MHz): This is the deal-breaker. Every modern warehouse, retail inventory system, and asset tracking program uses UHF tags for their long-range capability. NFC readers cannot detect UHF signals at all.

The Practical Reality for Business

So, can NFC reader read RFID in a way that helps your business? For inventory, logistics, or asset tracking—almost certainly not.

The range is centimeters (you must touch or nearly touch the tag). It reads one tag at a time. It can’t handle the bulk, automated scanning that makes RFID valuable for operations.
