I was standing in a client’s warehouse last month. They had a stack of HF access cards on the desk, a pile of UHF pallet tags on the floor, and an iPhone in their hand. The operations manager looked at me and asked: “Can NFC be used to read RFID tags? Like, all of these, with my phone?”
The short answer is yes—but only a very specific kind of RFID, under very specific conditions. And if you assume it works for everything, you’ll waste time and money.
Let me give you the real breakdown, no marketing fluff.
Part 1: The Yes—NFC Reads HF RFID (13.56 MHz)
Here’s the truth that gets buried in spec sheets: NFC is a subset of RFID . It operates at 13.56 MHz in the High Frequency band and uses communication protocols derived directly from HF RFID standards.
If you have an NFC reader—whether it’s your phone, a desktop USB reader, or a payment terminal—it can read HF RFID tags that operate at 13.56 MHz and speak the right protocols .
What actually works:
I’ve tested this myself dozens of times. Tap an NTAG213 sticker to an Android phone running “NFC Tools”—reads instantly. That sticker is an RFID tag. So yes, NFC can read RFID tags—specifically HF RFID at 13.56 MHz .
Part 2: The Hard No—What NFC Absolutely Cannot Read
Now here’s where the confusion costs people real money.
NFC cannot read LF RFID (125 kHz). Period. Those old white proximity fobs, animal implants, industrial tool tags—none of them. The NFC antenna is tuned for 13.56 MHz. It literally cannot resonate at 125 kHz .
NFC cannot read UHF RFID (860-960 MHz). Those white stickers on warehouse pallets, retail apparel, and logistics boxes? Invisible to your NFC reader. Not “hard to read”—invisible. The radio front-end has no circuitry to decode UHF signals .
NFC cannot read active RFID. Different frequencies, different protocols, different power architectures. Not even close.
So when someone asks “can nfc be used to read rfid tags”, I have to stop them and say: Which RFID? Because the answer flips completely based on that one detail.
Part 3: Wait—I’ve Seen Devices That Read Both
Yes, they exist. But here’s the critical detail:
A multi-frequency reader that handles both NFC and, say, UHF contains two complete, separate radios in one box . The Socket Mobile DuraScan D751, for example, reads both NFC and HF RFID tags, but it’s a dedicated device with specific hardware for 13.56 MHz . It’s not one radio magically tuned to everything—it’s two radios sharing an enclosure.
