I was on a site visit last year. A facilities manager pulled out a stack of old white proximity cards from a drawer. He pointed at a brand new UHF portal we were installing for pallet tracking and asked: “Can I tap these on that reader for employee access?”
No. No, you cannot.
And he’s not alone in asking. The question “can all RFID readers read all RFID cards” comes up constantly. It sounds reasonable—they’re both “RFID,” right? Same word, same technology. Must work together.
Wrong. And if you assume it does, you’re going to waste serious money.
The Short Answer: Not Even Close.
An LF 125 kHz access card will not work with a UHF rfid reader. A UHF inventory tag will not work with an HF/NFC reader. A MIFARE DESFire card with high encryption will not work with a cheap USB reader that only grabs UIDs.
They operate on different frequencies, different protocols, and often entirely different physics. This isn’t a software update problem. It’s a hardware incompatibility .
The Three Big Divides That Kill Interoperability
Let’s walk through why your card drawer is probably a museum of incompatible technologies.
1. Frequency. This Is the Dealbreaker.
RFID isn’t one frequency. It’s three distinct bands, and a reader built for one cannot hear the others .
- LF (125 kHz): Short range, slow data, works through water and metal. Animal chips, old access fobs, industrial tool tracking. Read range: centimeters .
- HF (13.56 MHz): Medium range, faster data, NFC compatible. Payment cards, modern access badges, library books. Read range: up to 30 cm, sometimes 1 meter with big antennas .
- UHF (860-960 MHz): Long range, very fast, reads hundreds of tags per second. Supply chain, retail inventory, vehicle gates. Read range: 3–20 meters depending on tag and power .
Here’s the test I do with clients: I hold a 125 kHz access card up to a CYKEO UHF handheld reader. Nothing. Dead air. The card might as well be a piece of plastic. The reader’s radio is tuned to 900 MHz. It doesn’t even know the 125 kHz signal exists. That’s not a brand issue—that’s physics .
2. Protocol. Even at the Same Frequency, They Might Not Speak.
This is the sneaky one. Two devices can operate at 13.56 MHz and still not understand each other .
HF RFID has multiple protocol layers:
- ISO 14443: Short-range “proximity” cards. Think tap-to-pay credit cards. Read range ~10 cm .
- ISO 15693: Longer-range “vicinity” cards. Library books, some asset tracking. Read range up to 1 meter .
A reader designed for ISO 15693 might read an ISO 14443 card at very close range, but not reliably. A reader designed only for ISO 14443 usually cannot read ISO 15693 at all .
And that’s before we talk about encryption. A MIFARE DESFire card with secure authentication requires a reader that holds the correct cryptographic keys. You can’t just “read” it with any off-the-shelf HF reader. The reader has to be authorized in the system .
3. Active vs. Passive. Totally Different Animals.
A passive tag waits for the reader to shout, scavenges power, and whispers back. An active tag has a battery and broadcasts its own signal, sometimes continuously .
A passive UHF reader cannot “hear” an active 433 MHz tag. The frequencies are different, the modulation is different, and the reader’s receiver isn’t designed to decode a self-powered beacon. You need a dedicated active reader, or at least a dual-technology device with two separate radios .
So What Actually Works Together?
Here’s the practical rule I give integrators:
- A UHF reader reads UHF passive tags that comply with EPC Gen2 / ISO 18000-63. That’s it. No LF. No HF .
- An HF reader reads 13.56 MHz passive tags that match its supported protocol (ISO 14443, ISO 15693, or both, depending on the model). It will not read LF or UHF .
- An LF reader reads 125 kHz passive tags. That’s the whole job .
- An active reader reads active tags at its designed frequency (often 433 MHz or 2.4 GHz). It won’t read passive tags .
There are multi-frequency readers that combine, say, HF and UHF in one box. But those are two complete radios sharing an enclosure, not one radio that reads everything .
The “Universal Reader” Myth
I see vendors claim “universal compatibility.” Be very careful with that word. A reader that supports multiple protocols within a single frequency band exists. A reader that supports EPC Gen2 and ISO 18000-6B on UHF? Yes, some do . A reader that supports both HF and UHF? Yes, but it’s two separate radio modules.
A reader that reads LF, HF, UHF, and active tags in one device with one antenna? No. That’s not a product. That’s a PowerPoint slide.
Why This Confusion Costs You
I’ve seen companies buy a bulk lot of “RFID readers” on price alone, then discover they can’t read their existing access cards. I’ve seen warehouses buy UHF handhelds for inventory and then try to use them for vehicle yard tracking with active tags. Doesn’t work.
RFID is not USB-C. You don’t plug one thing into another and it just works. You match the reader to the card. You match the frequency to the application. You match the protocol to the system.
CYKEO’s Stance: Compatibility Is Engineered, Not Assumed
When a client asks us “can all RFID readers read all RFID cards,” we don’t give them a brochure. We ask: what cards are you using now? What frequency? What protocol? What data do you need to capture?
Then we match the hardware. Not the other way around.
Your access card, your inventory tags, your vehicle transponders—they are not interchangeable. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you a problem, not a solution.
Need to sort out what actually works with your existing credentials? CYKEO’s engineers can help you audit your current cards and deploy readers that are guaranteed compatible—no guesswork, no wasted hardware.
