You can get solid long-range performance out of a directional antenna like the CK-B5 as long as you set it up with some intention. The 5dBi gain and the narrow 60° beam already give you good reach, so most of the work comes down to alignment and reader settings. Point the antenna straight at the read zone—using a simple laser pointer or alignment tool helps—and keep it mounted around three to five meters high so the beam hits pallets or conveyor items cleanly.
On the reader side, run the output near the upper end of the legal limit (usually around 30–33dBm) and leave frequency hopping on to keep interference under control. If you’re operating in ETSI regions, sticking to 865–868MHz is often quieter and more stable. With those basics dialed in, the long-range reads usually fall into place.

Directional antennas make more sense on smart shelves because they let you control exactly where the reads happen. With a narrow beam like the CK-B5, the antenna only “looks” at the shelf section you want, so you don’t accidentally pick up tags from the next tier or the next bay. The rear reflector also keeps the signal from leaking behind the shelf, so even in dense tag environments, the read field stays stable and the VSWR stays low.
For installation, mounting the antenna slightly above each shelf and tilting it down around 45° usually gives a clean, well-defined read zone.
